The Marcus Garvey Karate Club (MGKC) was established in 1986 by Sensei Ed Baron and Khatib Waheed at Walbridge Community School, in North St. Louis. In 2007, the MGKC became an official member of the World Matsubayashi-Ryu Karate-Do Association (WMKA).
The students are taught traditional karate-do in keeping with the teachings of Sensei Barron and Osensei Shoshin Nagamine. Instruction is designed to help increase the student’s mental, emotional and physical development. Instructions in karate-do include: standing and moving basics; kata (forms); kumite (sparring) and physical conditioning.

Instructions designed to further enhance the students mental and emotional development places importance on: developing a positive self-identity; re-building and maintaining family and community; pursuing non-violent resolutions to conflict; remaining drug-free; respecting and celebrating cultural differences; and behaving responsibly as world citizens.

Together we are “Reclaiming our youth; strengthening our families and communities; and securing our future.”
